Minimum and Standard Toilet Cubicle Sizes / Dimensions

There are no set standard sizes for toilet cubicles, however, Building regulations do govern the minimum dimensions for a cubicle and are provided as a guide for cubicle systems manufacturers and suppliers.

The Building Regulations Part M and the Equality Act 2010 provides guidance on Standard, Ambulant and Enlarged Toilet Cubicle sizes which are as listed below:

Standard Toilet Cubicle Size

The standard toilet cubicle size is specified as below:

Depth: 1500mm to WC Panel
Width: 850mm
Manoeuvering Space: 450mm Diameter
Door: Opens inwards*
Door width: 600mm
Lock: Closing and opening bar

Ambulant Disabled Toilet Cubicle Size

For all same sex washrooms – the standard ambulant toilet cubicle size is:

Depth: 1500mm to WC Panel
Width: 850mm
Free Activity Space: 750mm door to pan
Door: Must Open outwards
Door width: 660mm
Grab Rail: Yes – Horizontal & Vertical
Lock: Closing and opening bar

Enlarged Toilet Cubicle Size

Where more than 3 toilet cubicles are provided in a washroom, one must be Enlarged size:

Depth: 1500mm to WC Panel
Width: 1200mm between partitions
Manoeuvering Space: minimum 450mm Diameter
Door: Must Open outwards
Door width: 700mm
Grab Rail: Yes – Horizontal & Vertical
Space:
For Folding Changing Table & Shelf
Lock: Closing and opening bar

* Note: All ‘standard’ cubicle sizes must provide a mechanism, that in the case of an emergency, will allow the cubicle door to be opened outwards from the outside.
